New Baby, reading manuals, not a clue!!!

Postby fredcleff101 » Fri Aug 27, 2010 7:33 am

OK OK, so yes I'm new to the board and feeling baffled. The guy I bought it from was useing the HDR as the master and some wild hookup system? There is a clock card but its not the apogee card. I tried the hookup as he described it to me and I'm lost I used the hookup guide and have been reading manuals till blind. Three DIO-8 cards in the D8B and in the HDR with the stock clock card. The transport in the D8B will not respond. ARHHHH!!!! 3.0V in the D8B, I think I'm loseing it. Any ideas guys, Thanks - Fred.

Welcome to the forum, Fred.

Do you get the transport display to run? Any sound are coming/going trough? Are your MIDI cables connected?

Hi Peter, No I have'nt made any progress in that area, I read another of your ideas from another posting and flushed all the old startups from days gone by down the toilet and am working on the new startup you said the board will create thanks for that ! Also I ran through chanal one and get signal on the meter bridge for chanal one and in the mains plus sound thru headphones (no monitors hooked up just yet) but get no signal at all thru the HDR. Checked and reset the Bios in both HDR and D8B after changing the battery in the D8b. The midi cables are in place but don't know if they are working or not ? Thanks for asking - Fred.

Fred,

Not currently at the console, but have you checked the settings in the SETUP section of the desk and in the "digital In/Out" section (I think it is called something like this) check that you have the DIO-8 cards selected. To be certain of exactly what to do, read the manual carefully on this topic.

If you get no response from anyone else, when I get to the console (in about an hours time) I will look up the section and post exactly what you should see.

My guess is that there is nothing wrong with the equipment, but rather that you have not done the internal setup correctly.

David

Just had a quick look at the Vers 3.0 manual and on P64/65 there are details as to what to do. Click on the Digital I/O icon on the LHS and then check to see what you have as the console's defaults in the three tape boxes, you should see DIO-8 (I think --- will check on my desk soon), also check to see if clock is showing Internal, UV22 is off etc.

Once you set all this up correctly, try to see if you can get signal either into or out of the HDR.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the response david, I checked and as best I can tell its all good for the card set up on the D8B and the HDR. I went thru all the Bios setting again just for safty sake and they are all good in both. I think you have point and there is something I missed in the setup somewhere. Now I'm getting signal thru the board in chanal 1 and the main L/R outs, also the headphones but nothing to the HDR. any clues? Thanks = Fred.

Since you're using the DIO-8 cards, and I don't know whether you are using the TDIF or ADAT interface, I'll just say that you need to make that selection on the d8b and the HDR under Setup/Digital I/O.

Hey thanks Peter, I'm useing adat and have it set in both the HDR and D8B.
I keep Checking the signal path on the D8B thinking perhaps I missed something still no signal the HDR. Is there a check list on line some where I can download, sort on a knownot safety net. (I would be the Knownot or Knothead as my uncle use to say). Thanks again for all the input. - Fred.

Fred,

Sorry I did not get back yesterday as promised --- things went off the rails.

I have just looked at the desk's setup and have the following for you. Sorry if I start from scratch.

1. You have the DIO-8 cards --- are they connected to the three Tape slots?
2. You are using ADAT --- do you have six light pipe leads connected between the desk and the HDR?
3 If No.2above is positive --- are the light pipe leads connected to the correct connectors at both ends (ie "out" from desk to "in" on HDR and vice versa)?
4. You say you have a clock card (not Appogee) --- is it inserted into the correct slot on the desk?
5. I do not use the HDR but rather the Alesis HD24, so I am not entirely sure about the HDR, but are the cards on the HDR ALL inserted into the correct slots and if required, is there a clock card in the HDR?
6. Is the time code on both the desk and HDR set EXACTLY the same?

Now the d8B setup.

In the Digital I/O section of the Setup box, as you have DIO-8 cards, you should have them set as follows:

Under the three tape boxes you should be showing DIO-8 and ADAT as the Input and Output, if not set it up to show this.
Ensure that at the bottom of this dialogue box where it shows the clock information, ensure that it is set to (say) 48K, then ensure that the HDR is set the same. Also ensure that in the desk's setup section you show the clock as being Internal.

When you switch on the d8B, ensure that the HDR is switched off and only switch it on after the d8B has fully loaded.

If you play the HDR does it show that anything has been recorded onto the hard drive at any time in the past (ie if you hit play can you see the HDR's meters showing signal), if so play this back and select BANK 2 (Chnl 25 - 48) and see if you get any of the desk's channel meters to show a signal.

If there is no previously recorded signal on the HDR, is it possible to record something (eg from an MP3 player or something) into the HDR directly in analogue form, if so, try and play this back into the desk as detailed in the previous paragraph.

If you can get signal into Chnl 25, etc, then the HDR and the input to the DIO-8 cards are working. Then you only have to get the signal from the desk to the HDR.

Before we try things to get signal to the HDR, check all the settings and connections as detailed above and let us know the result, then we can try extra things to get the signal to the HDR.

I might not be able to respond for about 24hrs from now.

Hey David, I finaly had a chance to get back at this. The guy I bought all this from wiped everything off the HDR and I don't have a way to put anything on it to try the chanal 25 idea. All the DIO8 cards are in place on both units and also the lightpipe connections are good when I check at the ends they show light through them. So I still think I;m missing something in my setup. Maybe not haveing something assigned correctly? If I had a way to load a working project with an established setup from a floppy or something along those lines would that help? I'm still sure once I get it going I'm going to love the system! I may not be the brightest star on the poncho but I am persistant!!! Thank you all again so much for your input - Fred.
