new harddisc for D8B

Hello everybody

I was wondering, because it is realy difficult to replace the D8B's harddisc, if there is anybody on this forum
who succeeded in doing this.

What's hard about it?

You remove the HD assembly along with the floppy drive, you attach a new HD to the assembly, you put it back.

It's just Lego on steroids.

Only proviso is that you use no larger than a 32 gig drive.

Hi Charly,

If you are uncomfortable changing out the disc, then you should find someone who will change it out for you. From a purely physical standpoint there is not much to it; the information is in the database, which can be found here at this forum. You need to save your files and also re-install the operating system, unlock your plug-ins, and some other stuff that I can't remember right now.

This is where a Mackie authorize service center can be your best friend because they know how to do this stuff in their sleep. Sometimes they have to read the service manual, but they also have one to read.

I am confident that I have changed many harddisc units in more than a few machines, including the d8b. By the nature in which you asked your question you might want to look for someone to do it for you and set the mixer up correctly.

So the longer answer is yes. if I may be so bold to speak for some other members, most all the people on this forum have had success in changing out their harddisc (over here where I live we call it a hard drive... same thing). It is pretty easy to do but if you get "in there" and not know what you are doing, there is a chance you will damage something else.

PS: I just saw your post Peter. Some folks are not mechanically inclined and do not work well with these things. It is like when someone has never blown a horn and when they pick it up you run the other direction because it sounds so bad... why would I expect someone to sound good. Just because I can make an instrument sound good doesn't mean everyone can. Just saying and not trying to start up anything.

Hello Michael and Peter thanks for answering to my my question.

You are right Michael i am a pc novice, still learning to cope with folders and downloads etc.
So BIOS & Register things i dont touch!
But i have a good friend who's helping me with these kind of complex material, but he has a full
daytime job and family to take care of so his time is sparse.

We both have worked 4 full evenings on installing the new hard drive and " Everything that Can go wrong
Did go Wrong "
For example like i wrote before, once we were looking the whole evening at the vga display (which i set up in the machine
room, hee i'm from the old analogue days, forgetting to look at the mixer-display)

The other evening my friend finally found out why the floppydrive was not scanning the discs, aftert this still no formatting.
What was the problem: the first of the three boot-up floppies, which i ordered and payed for here at the Mackie Service Centre appeared to be empty no data on the disc.

These things can happen. But still no new drive in my D8B I have to wait after my hollidays.
My friend has attached an old floppy drive on his computer etc etc
