New guy to the forum and D8B, troubles recording

Hey I just got a D8B the other day from my boss. It was given to him and he gave it to me. Its running 3.0 right now. My problem is I can't get it to actually record anything. I arm the track, but then go to arm the main transport and the record button wont light up. Tried doing it from the screen too and had the same problem. Any ideas on what could cause this and how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I figured I could record to the main computer that comes with the board? Im a complete noob as far as this thing goes. I pluggged a guitar into the line in just to test it out and this is the problem ive come across so far. I'm sure its something small im missing but have no idea what it is.

oh boy. You need something to record TO. You can't record to the unit's computer.
First step is to determine what I/O options you have. What cards are on the back of the board?
You also have some reading to do. Check the database at the top of this screen.

That would be your small problem. This is not a console/recorder combo. It is just a mixer. You need an HDR or something to record to. The "main computer" that comes with it is for running the console, automation, saving session files, etc. There is no provision for recording audio files to the internal hard-drive. Break open the manual my friend and get to learning.

Looks like I got a lot of reading to do then lol. Also I have a 002 on a mac with pt8 if that helps any. Im gonna get to researching this thing more before blurting out some more stupid stuff. thanks for the help

Don't feel bad, you are not the first to fall into that line of thinking. A lot of people see the transport controls and it makes sense to them that these controls must be there to operate the onboard recorder. In fact, you are the 2nd guy in a month or so to believe it would record on board. So, you are not alone.

I remember the frustration I had when I got my d8B (not long after it came out).

I had seen the desk at a trade show -- it was connected to a HDR24/96 recorder (that was situated some distance from the desk), but at the show they had used only one monitor (with changeover switch).

The sales person, from the local Mackie agents, demonstrating the desk (system) had some pre-recorded material on the HHD24/96 and was playing this back with the screen showing the various recorded tracks. although the fact that the signal on the screen was eminating from an external sourse rather than the actual d8B was not really (if at all) explained.

I did not twig that the desk was not the recorder, but only the mixer and that what I was seeing had not actually been recorded on (inside) the desk.

A few weeks later I ordered/purchased my desk. On its arrival I unpacked it (like at child at Xmas), set it up and turned it on. Plugged in a mic and spoke (to get levels), then hit the transport's record button. BUT, I could not for love or money find what I had just recorded --- or at least thought I had recorded!!!!!

After about three days of shere frustration, trying to find all that I had test recorded, I decided to open and read the manual and to my horror I discovered that I needed something to record to. I had believed up to that time, that I had purchased a big Protools, Cubase or something similar.

I now have 2 x 24-track recorders an 1 x 8-track recorder and a Masterlink for mastering, all connected and working perfectly --- well, I have only once used more than 48 tracks, but it sure looks impressive (or so I have been told on a number of occassions.

AND, they have me as a "Premium Member" and with a 5 star rating on the Mackie forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mono, don't feel embarrised and welcome to the forum and the world (frustrating most of the time) of the d8B.

No I am not unfortunately.

But I made up for it by buying as many tracks as I could fit into the desk --- you know the result (D2T2U about 30 tracks)!!!!!!!
