Frozen V-pots and lifeless faders and no sound

Postby Carlo » Wed Aug 07, 2019 11:41 am

Dear All,

As you may have read lately my 2nd d8b has issues. I smelled a burning smell and found a burnt ceramic capacitor at preamp 16 on the Line Surface control board. I disabled the Line surface board by removing the ribbon cables in order to make sure that the d8b is still ok and i experienced the following problem:

1. When connecting a guitar on any channel the signal seems healthy with a good level on the meter bridge BUT i noticed that when the PAN pot is in the middle (MONO) the sound is bearable noticeable.... When i turn the pot left or right the sound comes back to normal but with a very big difference....THERE IS NO SEPARATION on the speakers or HEADPHONES when you turn the pot Left or right (or full left or right) the sound comes out from both speaker (in MONO) whether is panned left or right.

THEN....THEN....THEN....

I pulled out the majority of cards and re-seated the ribbon cables and cleaned the connections. I pulled nearly all of the cards even the DSP/CODEC/ ANALOG boards and cleaned etc. Then i placed everything in place and booted the d8b....the following problem cropped up:

Frozen V-pots and lifeless faders and no sound signal when trying to play an instrument on any channel. ALL the buttons work but the V-POTS are stuck with lifeless faders. The V-POTS can be moved from the software using the mouse and it responds on the mixer but manually i cant do that.... However the faders remain lifeless on the mixer even if i move them on the software with the mouse.

I'm giving up and was wondering if i should dismantle the crippled d8b and keep it as parts for the other d8b.

What should have gone wrong any suggestions please?

regards
Carlo

If everything was ok until the burnt cap on the line surface board, logically it's that board, however, the d8b is not logical ;) Are you able to get hold of another boards to try that, or replace the cap? The problem is that it might also be something else as well?

Hi Phil,

Yes im waiting for the board to be delivered. I hope its the only thing that is causing this freeze. Maybe i have a power distribution problem too. I'm suspecting in the power distribution board. I have also checked if the PSU of the faulty d8b is the culprit or not by swapping the PSU with the one that is working with the 2nd d8b and the problem of the frozen Vpots and lifeless faders persisted. So i believe that if there is a power problem its coming from the distribution board.

Too many hours lost for fault finding.....i love the d8b but they are too problematic....and they are getting too old...

Still more stable than the console that followed. But they are getting old as you say.

Is the dxb similar to the d8b? What's the difference between the two? Can you use same cards?

Nope, can't use the same cards. The dxb is way more flexible in terms of routing and can run up to 192k. Firewire capable. A lot of the cards are the same type but not interchangeable between consoles.

As you said Phil the d8b is not logical at all. I disconnected the surface line board and the mixer is back to life with Vpots and faders working however the original problem is still there that is the signal does not separate left or right when panning and in the middle no sound at all. At least i know that the surface line board was causing the 2nd problem (lifeless faders and frozen Vpots). Will wait for the line surface board to arrive and see what happens. I hope that the separation problem in panning is resolved with the new board.

Regards

Carlo
