I would only take it down if you can replace it with rigid fiberglass, otherwise leave it up. Most of the Auralex product is not as efficient as the rigid fiberglass and more resembles closed cell foam, especially this stuff.



Best of luck with the new monitors. If they get 'er done then declare yourself the winner and get to mixing some good stuff.

the product I got from aurulex
was the package deal it came with 8 corner bass traps
and the rest was the 2x2 that went on the wall
to be honest about it I could not tell that much of a difference with
the bass traps in this small room. now when I put up the bass traps I made
with the next best thing to 703 so they say it did make a difference
and I could hear the difference. but with this small room the bass was still
not where I was thinking it should be. so that's why I went with another
monitor the bass is not that heavy now and so I think I can make better
mixes now or judge my mixes better. I will see. the next thing for
me to do is get some speaker stands instead of the speakers being on
the mixing desk. do you think the speaker stands can help with what
I hear or do you think it will make any difference at all. so much
for have a little room like this but its all I got to work with now

In small rooms, I don't think it is possible to over treat the room in my opinion. It is all about how your mixes translae outside your studio. I would think if your were bass heavy in your room and you considered this during decision time in your mixing process and corrected for it, you would be bass lite outside of your room. Small rooms are tough to deal with, espicially if they are sqare.

I like speaker stands for the sheer fact that it opens up more possibilities for placement in the room but I am not sure how much they will help you out in your situation. I would throw more money at DIY bass traps before I did speaker stands if money is an issue.

Hi all,
Just wanted to add my two cents to this discussion. I have mixed in rooms that have no treatment and rooms that had professional treatment, and I will admit I could tell a difference in the end result. That being said it was not an astounding difference and I'm not sure that I buy into the theory that by mixing in an acoustically perfect space that my mix will somehow translate better in all the imperfect spaces where it will be played. But what did make a huge difference in my mixing was getting away from powered monitors and modern amplifiers. Modern ampifiers are crap and they equalize and distort your music. I bought a 70's era Phase Linear 400 (which one audio publication rated number one among the most significant power amplifiers of all time) and the difference through just a regular old pair of JBL 4410's was stunning.
I can now hear in crystal clear detail things that I was never able to hear before , especially in the extreme high and low end.
If you can't hear what is wrong, then you can't fix it. I'm not knocking room treatment, it's important, but I got a lot more bang for my buck out of this vintage amplifier.

I had the opposite reaction. The difference to me was absolutely a mind blowing difference, at least in my mix room. Which version of the Flame Linear 400 are you using? Like everything out there, I can find people that think those amps are the coolest thing since sliced bread and some that say "Eh...." I have noticed that my non-powered monitors seem to really open up with a monster overpowered amp behind them. Of course, you must use much caution so you don't hit yourself in the head with a flying driver.

The other thing I notice with a lot of mix spaces is how they can change depending on how loud the monitoring is. The quieter, the less room interaction you get.

Are the 4410's your main/only monitors? I am also curious if you tried the JBLs with a different amp as well. Those JBLs seem sort of big for a nearfield, though you may not be using them that way and if they work for you though, you can't argue that. I worked at a smaller studio years back that used those JBLs as their big loud client pleasers with a Hafler amp. I tended to stay on the Tannoy 6.5s driven by some smaller Tascam amp as I recall. I do remember the JBLs being impressive but I never could mix on them. But then again, that was long time ago in a galaxy far far away....
