Need New D8B Hard Drive

Hello, My one owner D8B hard drive is making serious noise. Is there anyone that would format a new drive and sell it to me so that I can just swap and be good to go? I have a v5.1 license. Will a SSD work? Thanks

Hi Electric Peak,

I've recently replaced my old d8b HD, with a brand new 30GB SSD drive. Is very important to use a drive no larger than 32 GB. I've used a Corsair NOVA 30 GB SSD, and all is quiet right with it at the moment. You probably will need a SATA to IDE adapter to adapt the SSD to the IDE interface, something like this: https://www.alternate.es/html/product/T ... r/1057606/? and probably a 2.5 to 3.5in brackets, to attach the SSD to the d8b: https://www.alternate.es/html/product/K ... 35/135851/?

I followed Todd's instructions and it works perfectly...it's an inexpensive solution as well. - $17.00

Not sure, but I can tell you about my experience: the Corsair NOVA 30 GB, once formatted correctly, will work fine. This SSD is much larger than needed, in fact you could use a compact flash card as bbb has suggested. I've decided myself for the SSD, but it's a matter of taste, I think .

Currently my D8B is working fine but I dare not turn it off. The HD is making a slight noise but after I'm finished with booked projects I'm going to dive into the fix.

I'm a Mac guy and do not have access to a PC and or have PC skills. Any suggestions how I can get the Flash Card or SSD formatted and my HD data transferred? Should I load v5.1 and authorize before I transfer session data? I guess I could do the session data transfers via the floppy. Can the SSD be formatted via the floppy? Sorry to sound stupid, but I've been a Mac guy since the Apple IIe.

Another thing I don't know how to do is check what CPU speed and HD size my D8B has. I don't want to turn if off fearing that it won't start again. Is there a way to access system info without turning it off?

This could be very tricky for a Mac guy without PC skills, I think .

I've a few ideas, anyway:

1) If you don't have access to a PC, perhaps you could ask at your local computer shop, maybe they could be able to format the SSD for you, or sell you an SSD PC formated.

2) You could ask how to format a HD in Mac to use it with a PC here: http://www.macuarium.com/cms/ . This is a Spanish forum, but I think there could be somebody that knows how to do this.

3) This is the "freak way", and yes, you would need a PC in order to follow this steps :

3.1 - Go and get this: http://www.syschat.com/download59.html (MS-DOS 7.10 Boot Disk)
3.2 - Download and install this in the PC: http://floppy-image.softonic.com/
3.3 - Create a floppy boot disk of the ms-dos 7.10 OS, by read/writing the downloaded image that you've downloaded at the 3.1 step, with the PC app that you've installed at the 3.3 step.
3.4 - Follow the step 8 of this instructions: http://www.sonido-7.com/d8b/maintenance.html#Post5-1 to format the HD. At this point I recommend you a tea cup . By the way, you don't have to type "A:/ FDISK C:" you should type only "FDISK C:" after the "A:\>" or "prompt". The same is true for "FORMAT C:". Bear in mind that this two DOS commands will destroy any HD info, so use them only with the NEW HD, and, as developers likes to say, "use it at your own risk".
3.5 - Ok, assuming all is done successfully, now you can proceed with the Mackie d8b 5.1 OS installation, but please, remember the point 6 of the "Hard drive replacement: 10 Golden Rules", I mean: Type the format:ON statement in the Tools.ini file on the first floppy of your Mackie OS-version. No. Save your session files prior to do anything.

Yes, by using MS-DOS (or a boot floppy with the FDISK and FORMAT commands inside, I think).

Not sure about this, but I think the only way is by entering the BIOS, and this means a restart.

albridi, I can't thank you enough!!! I do have a friend that is really good with PCs. Will the D8B CPU power up without the D8B connected? If it will, then I could just take the CPU to my friend and follow your instructions. If the CPU won't power up unless the console is connected, I'll have to brave this on my own. My friend is an hour and 1/2 away. Thanks very much albridi!
