Digital Pops

Postby geepea » Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:19 pm

Hello everyone. I'm new to the d8b Forum even though I've had my d8b for almost 10 years. I'm just developing a problem. I'm using a MOTU MTP AV for my word clock. I have a Apogee w/c card in the d8b. I'm recording with Pro Tools 10 using the 002. When I arm tracks in Pro Tools I now get the digital pops, Is my Apogee card gone bad?

Has your setup remained unchanged and working fine and only recently the pops started? Or has something been added to your setup and THEN the pops started?

What is your master/slave Word Clock routing like? Has that changed.

The only recent change was in October 2012 I moved to a new location. But, I didn't start having the pops until last week. What was funny was that I had did a drum session that night and then the next morning I had another drum session scheduled and it was that morning when it started. That's why I was wondering whether my Apogee card died or something.

My routing is Apogee card in to MOTU word sync out. d8b and MOTU settings are on internal and Pro Tools is ADAT. Same setup I've used for years.

Yes, Joe. I've only had to replace the power supply for the CPU. Otherwise I've been blessed. I think the d8b knows that I've been eyeing the new Beringer X32. LOL

Try changing the D8B from internal to Wordclock.

I have tried that. The board goes crazy.

A few more thoughts:

Try cleaning and reseating your apogee clock card.

Possibly a corrupt D8b startup (delete all startup files and reboot) or Pro Tools session (create a new session - not from a template)

set each device to the same sample rate

Although it was working for you previously, it it strange that you had both the d8b and motu set to internal (only one should be a master)- I would recheck the clock cable between the two (sync out to sync in) and choose one accordingly to be the master.

Try booting the D8b first if it's the slave - then turn on the clock source

Hope you get it going properly again.

How is the D8B configured in this setup? Assuming the 002 is connected to a PC or Mac via FW, I'm a little curious as to how the MTP fits in this scheme? What exactly is its function? When you say: "My routing is Apogee card in to MOTU word sync out." that means to me that the MTP is providing WC to the D8B....which by all logic should be in External Sync mode. And you say it is the Master??? Sorry, but that makes no sense.

Assuming the D8B is routed to and from the the 002 via Lightpipe, and set as Master clock. What happens if the MTP is temporarily taken out of the equation entirely? So it's just a DAW/002/D8B combo. Still get pops?

My point being that the Apogee card may not be the culprit at all. You need to rule out the clock source before you start tearing inside the D8B.

I just don't have a clear picture what is going on with your hookup.
