That suggests a loose ribbon connector somewhere inside the board. This isn't a rail cap issue. Time to flip it over, open it up and re-seat the connectors. Particularly the ones attached to the Control Board.

Yes that was the first thing I tried, I have done this to all the accessible cables.

This has to be one of the strangest things I have heard of on the forum..... I wish I could think of something to suggest but I am grasping at straws on this one.

Or maybe when you was in there you reconnected one of the multi-pin cables missing one pin by mistake...

It sure sounds really weird.

That was almost going to be my answer before Peter posted while I was writing this. I was going to say: I think you missed something in there....try again. This really sounds like a ribbon connector issue. Peter's guess sounds like the most likely....it's easy to miss this one.

My understanding is that it just started happening, prior to the OP jumping inside the console.

To be clear, this is what studiodaz originally said:
I have open up the board to see if any cables have come loose and also open the brain/pc end too, but I can't see anything obviously wrong.

...which suggests to me that observation was all that occurred. If studiodaz did indeed remove and re-seat (and possibly cleaned) ALL connectors, at both ends, leading to the Control Board as he says here:
Yes that was the first thing I tried, I have done this to all the accessible cables.

...then I am still of the opinion that the job wasn't done as thoroughly as it should have been. I think he missed something.

The idea that buttons other than the bank select switches are flipping banks suggests three possibilities, already suggested: re-seat the connectors, replace the RAM and reinstall the O/S.

The description of how the RAM was dealt with is suspect. The O/S seems least likely as studiodaz says he reinstalled and additionally plugged the board into a different CPU with the same screwed up bank selection results.

If it isn't the ribbon connectors then it could still be RAM....or possibly an active element on the controller board itself. The only way to rule that one out would be taking his board over to the other guy and swapping the controller board out to see if his unit works correctly with the other guys board. And as an additional verification, see if the other guys board fails with his Controller board in it.

-just sayin'...

Seconding what Frank says, I'd also have a look at those ribbon cables (both ends), again if I were you...

I agree, I think I need to do more of a thorough job with the ribbon cables. They all feel very tight and hard to pull off but I guess it still could be the cables giving me this problem. So far I have pulled all the ones on the Brain board and put them back again. I haven't done any cleaning to them yet. What would you suggest to use for this, switch cleaner or compressed air?

I am also leaning towards the line control surface 121 board and ribbon cable J36 as that's the area where the bank switches are. I wasn't able to remove the larger cable on it as its on the other side and I couldn't get to it. My next step is to remove this board and have a look at the cable and the board to see if there is anything that looks wrong.

The one thing I am finding strange is that when pressing solo or mute on channel 24 they do in fact solo and mute the channel, but at the same time also change the banks. I would have expected it to have only done one thing or the other, but not both.???

I think I can rule out the PC end with OS, RAM and serial cable as I got the same problems on the other CPU unit also using its serial cable.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, keep them coming.

It sounds like the line control board missing a clock signal. Yes, you should try to get at the other end of the cable (or should I write cables, as there are 3 or 4 - including the one for the TB mic - going to this board) - it is not evident, but can be done. You have to remove at least one of the side cheeks for that (to remove the piece on which the brain board is installed), if I remember well.

Tonight I stripped down the desk and took out 3 boards and cleaned the ribbon connectors and sockets, fixed my talk back button but after getting it all back together again its still doing it, :-(
