ALT I/O Question

So, I have an Analog card in the ALT I/O slot. How do I address these inputs and outputs? Where do they show up or, in general, how is the default routing configured. I am pretty quick on the d8B but.. this ALT I/O thing is baffling me.

The ALT inputs come in on the effect bank on rtn 1-8. The alt outputs are done in the set-up window in one of the sub menus(I can't remember off the top of my head which one).

The rtn 1-8 channels do not have EQ COMP or GATE on them, but...i think you should be able to use the Pre inserts on the 1-48 channels to re route those signals to any desired channel to have the DSP processing.

if I remember right the ALT output mirrors either the BUS 1-8 outs or AUX 1-8 Outs. I might be confused on that and I'm sure if I am some one will jump in and correct me.

Doesn't "mirror" (suggesting fixed). It's assignable via Setup>Network: Alt I/O (outputs) 1-8:

In the middle of the menu, a set of eight pulldown menu buttons will route audio signals from Aux 1–12, Bus 1–8, or L/R output through any of the eight outputs available on an I/O card installed in the Alt I/O slot.

There are additional setting controls for Sample Rate conversion and Status Bits in the Alt 1-8 section in the lower left of the Setup>Digital I/O menu.

But when you do select the source you want to send to the ALT output does it continue to send via the original output? ex: assign bus 1 to ALT out 1, will bus 1 still output from it's physical location as well; via the db-25 connector?

Yes, Busses still feed the analog DB25 connector, Auxes feed all 12 analog outs and the 2mix feeds its outputs uninterrupted. So it does mirror the sources. The way you stated it made me think that someone might construe that it was either 8 busses or 8 auxes fixed and dilated. I guess I shouldn't have started my answer with "Doesn't mirror". That was a mistake.

And to be clear, any combination (of up to eight) Bus, Aux or 2Mix sources can be routed to the Alt I/O card outputs.

I noticed that you run the D8B back into your Cubase DAW via a 9652. I used to do that when I had a PCI Mac/RME 9652 setup. That changed when Mac dropped PCI slots. Now I route the D8B's primary Cubase C7 input feed from an 8core Intel Mac/MOTU 2408 combo to an iMac running a 2nd instance of Cubase C7 via a MOTU UltraLite. The 2mix feeds the MOTU's S/PDIF while an analog set of 8 "stems" sent from the Alt I/O card feeds the MOTU's analog line inputs. I like the patchcordless flexibility the system affords.

In addition to the above info, the Alt I/O is also used to hook up a dual D8B set up. 
You can do this by connecting the output of the ALT I/O card from the “Slave” to the ALT I/O input of the “Master”. In this scenario, the "Slave" D8B will output audio from the Bus outs. The Bus outs from the "Slave" D8B will feed signal to the 8 return channels on the "Master" D8B and in turn the return channels will be mixed in with the other channels on the "Master" D8B to feed the master outputs and control room outs too. Just another use for the Alt I/O. )
