Crash,
Ok, I'll set that up when I get home in a few hours...but I went into the digital settings last night and saw a similar window...and if I remember right, they had the uv22 set to on, so I turned them off, but the three inputs and outputs didn't have any choices when I clicked the drop boxes...it was as if there were no choices to pick from...? How would that be possible? Could it be because there was no clock ???

Also, should uv22 be on or off? I thought I read somewhere this forgets down to 16bit if it's on...?

So, I'll hook up the rme out to the apogee in of the D8B...then set the apogee to external in the settings window...and if it'll let me I'll select Adat for my in/outs...

Supposing all that works, what else needs to be configured on the d8b?

but I'm just now trying to get the RME to see the optical outputs...haven't even gotten to the DAW to start configuring yet.

Is it me or does anyone else recognize the obvious first step?

Hey Frank! Are you saying I should start at the DAW??? I figured that since the RME has it's own monitoring mixer/software that I should get it operational with the d8b and from there get it mapped into the DAW...no?

With the Opt.8 cards you won't have any in/out options because there are not any. You get optical...or optical.

UV22... I would leave it off if you are doing the 24 bit dealio.

Brian, the thing about the RME card is that there isn't too much setup that you have to do. Make sure your settings in the RME control panel match up to what the d8b is saying as far as your sync goes.

Go to Cubase and select the driver for the RME and activate all I/O's. Then in the VST connection window assign you I/O's to tracks. Bam your done. Hit play on a Cubase project to make sure audio is being sent out. At this point you will also see Audio in the RME mixer, but leave it be till everything works then experiment with the possibilities. Ffor now just make sure it's set for 1->1 and leave it.

Honestly there is not much you have to setup on the d8b side except for the sync. Everything else is RME and DAW.

Ok, my head hurts...here we go...

First thing I did was hook up the clock from the RME out, to the Apogee IN. Then I went to the digital I/O page on the D8B and set it up like this...

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p33/ ... /d8b_1.jpg

Then I opened Cubase and I think I did what you said Casey...here's a picture of the cubase setup...for some reason it only turned on the first 16 in's and out's though...??? I don't know how to turn on the other 8 in's/out's.....

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p33/ ... cubase.jpg

The next picture is of the HDSP screen...it doesn't appear to have any inputs mapped???

Ok, now, I wanted to test the system, so I dropped a wav file into track 1 on Cubase and hit play, sure enough the track 1 level meter on the RME mixer started showing level! So, I figured I'd try track 2...so I copied the wave file on track one to track 2 and hit play...now both tracks are playing on Cubase, but still only the track 1 level meter on the RME mixer was showing level. Tried track 3 in cubase, same result. Now when I say track 1 in the RME mixer, I mean the BOTTOM LEFT level meter and the one directly above it. They both show level at the same time, and only those two. They are labeled "AT1 1" and "OUT 1"...I think somehting is definitely not setup right here...

So, I turned my attention to the D8B to see if anything was happening there...I hit the "Tape In" button and sure enough I was seeing level on track 25 (tape return 1)...but nothing on any other channels...this corresponded to what I was seeing on the RME Mixer. So, I decided to see what would happen if I changed the matrix...so I routed OUT 1 to AT1 2, and sure enough, the level meter on the D8B for channel 26 (tape return 2) jumped to life. I tried this with every channel for all 24 tape returns and they all worked perfectly. So this tells me that the only channel the RME is seeing is OUT 1 from cubase. But I can route that to whatever adat input to the D8B that I want.

Now, also, take notice that on the picture of the RME Mixer, the bottom row of meters are the adat outputs...all but the first two are greyed out...not sure if that means anything...

The last test I tried I plugged a mic into the D8B on channel 5, set my input level, and went to RME's mixer to see if I could see anything...nothing showed up...couldn't get an input on any channel...

Lots of reading I know...just trying to be accurate with what happened...as always, any advice is appreciated...!

Did you set up the routing for each channel in cubase? they automatically route to output 1(mono1). They do on my system anyways.

It does look like you will need to set up the input routing in the RME matrix. Not that hard.

Strange that it only saw the first 16 channels. Do all three ADAT options in the RME control panel show up as synced? Strange that the SPDIF did not activate as well.......very strange. If you make a 24 channel project does it give you the option to assign 17-24? I'm not in front of my setup or I'd see how mine is set up.

Take care of the routing first and we can work on the inactive channels once that works.

Ok Casey...sure enough, I didn't configure each track to output on their respective ADAT tracks...I tried it both in reaper and in Cubase, and it works! HOWEVER, here's a screenshot of the Cubase routing.....

Image

You'll notice that it only has outputs 1-16 to choose from...this corresponds with it only seeing the first 16 ins/outs...something I failed to mention is that this is Cubase 5 LE...I think the LE is limited to only 16 outputs...

Reaper works fine and allows me to pick any of the 24 channels available...so I think we've got the output routing handled...I didn't even start on the input routing, still gotta get that figured out...but I con't do anymore tonite, I gotta get some sleep...

Thanks for sticking with me on this...it's definitely coming together...!
