Question about I/O on D8B...

In all honesty, I'll never need All the inputs on the d8b...I mainly wanted it for a control surface, but if I could use some of the inputs as my interface to the PC that would be even better...and while I would try to get one with as much as possible, it wouldn't be completely necessary to have them all hooked up to the pc as inputs. Even if I could do 8 to the pc that would be plenty...maybe could save some money on getting 8 channels into the pc as opposed to 24?

What I'd like to be able to do is this...setup a patchbay with all my in/outs from the d8b, then I can just hook to whatever input I want at anytime. But I'd like the d8b to be able to output that to the pc on the proper channel. For example, lets say I have electric guitar plugged into channel 11 on the d8b, if I only have one 8 channel digital out, can I assign track 11 to go out one of the 8 available channels and be recorded on channel 11 of my DAW? Or am I limited to one card channels one through eight, second card 9-16, and so on? I suppose if I have to I could drag the tracks to another channel in the DAW, and just use tracks 1-8 for bringing in signal whenever I need...

It does sound like the rme 9652 might be a reasonably priced option on the used market...

The HDSP will do 24 channels I/O via adat the RayDat will do 32 I believe. And yes the 9652 it will take up two spaces but will only require the 1 PCI connection. I've tried to sync via adat with my 9652 and though it said it was synced I always had problems but when I switched over to the wordclock all those problems went away. This isn't to say that NigelC hasn't been successful with his set-up, it just didn't work for me.

Let's say you have only one Opt8 card and it's in Slot 1-8. That gives you eight digital optical outputs. You can route any channel from Banks 1, 2, or 3 to any of those outputs (Tape Outs). For example, channel 24 can be routed to Tape Out 1. You can also route any Bus on Master Bank 4 to any of the Tape Outs.

I'd suggest loading the d8b with Opt8 cards (at least the first three slots, though the Alt slot is also very handy) and getting an interface that can handle them all, like the ones recommended already. Make sure you get a d8b with a Apogee Clock Card and an interface with word clock connections.

Many times I've heard people say, "All I need is this," and then later on they're kicking themselves for not thinking ahead.

I use the Digiface without the word-clock connection and it is all fine. All three DIO-8 card are connected via optical cables. No digital glitches. The board have an Apogee clock card installed but the word-clock cable is not used. I get the wordclock from the ADAT1-8 port and the d8b is set to Internal (Master).

I really don't know if this is the best sound I can get out of it but I can't hear the difference. I guess that the original clock card has an inferior digital clock and therefore the Apogee Clock Card delivers a better sound.

Now I wonder if I'm getting the Apogee's clock source signal into my DIO-8 outs?

If you are looking for a fully loaded D8B I just listed one on ebay. My seller name there is ampoholic.

The console is super clean. It has V 5.1 software, MFX + UFX card, DIO8, AIO8, PDI8, Digital I/O, Apogee clock I/O card and original mackie Clock card, 3 nice plugins including Massenburg MDW 2x2 Parametric EQ, all of the cables, all documentation including v5.1 owners manual and manuals for plugins, quick start tape (I still can't believe they supplied this on VHS). Plus a ton of additional cables. 8 channel snakes, Didital cables, Blue Mic XLR cables, etc.

I have an intersting Mackie "Claim to fame". Somewhere around 1996 I was working for Sony and visiting dealers in the Seattle area. One of my former workmates was working for Mackie and I got invited to go to their company party on a Yacht. They had just had their first $1 million dollar month and Greg took the whole company out on Lake Washington in a probably 125 foot yacht. I got to meet Greg and party with the Mackie people all night. Quite an evening. Somewhere I still have my Mackie 1 million month T-shirt. Must be a collectible by now!

Yes, when the the Apogee Clock Card is installed, it is the d8b's internal clock, so that's what's being carried in the DIO8's optical signal. I think (but I'm not sure) the clock signal is only available to the first I/O slot, 1-8. Do OPT8 cards carry the clock just as DIO8s do? I don't remember the answer to that, if I ever knew it.

I have a Digiface, too, but I do use its clock in, being that it's synced to an Apogee Big Ben. I used to sync my old 2408 interface to the clock in the DIO8's optical stream (this was before the Apogee Clock card came out and that was the only way to do it). I had a few clocking issues with that setup. Man, that was a long time ago but it seems like yesterday.

For someone buying now, I strongly recommend getting an interface with word clock connectors. It can save you from a major road block later on, and then you end up spending even more money.

Yeah, I did some more research...it seems that as long as the card says HDSP on it it'll be ok...if not it's an earlier card and it doesn't work with 64-bit
