OK! Unfortunately, this solution - very expensive. Your choice - very small. You can try RME FIREFACE UCX, or RME FIREFACE UFX+ for Your macbook! Alternatively, You need old Intel Mac Pro with compatible PCI rme hammerfall digiface!

Unfortunately they don’t seem to have enough optical ports! For some reason there doesn’t seem to be many if any interfaces with more than 2 pairs of optical ports?!

Unfortunately, real professional solutions - in the past... I cant find any one. For this reason, I work on old hardware.

Yes! This may be work! But look about mac os x compatibility, and You will need external MIDI I/O!

Yes. But better solution - is the motu midi express xt usb

Excuse my ignorance but what more would the Motu midi do that a cable wouldn't? Sorry I'm not massively clued up on midi?

Cable will not support long midi words, in some case, when You need working with sysex messages. Cable - it is the "cutted" midi. For example, if You want to import some presets from Your mac to external VA synth, in sysex format via MIDI - You wil not be able to do it with Your "cable".
