This is really, really cool, Phil!!

I tried when you first posted this, but the link didn’t work yet… thanks for pointing me here again from the other thread. Glad I caught this!

Hard to believe that you didn’t do several rehearsals before recording. As Crash already said… the first thing that I thought was that this is REALLY tight! Especially the first link. And also really authentic sounding! Not like the cheap knockoffs you typically hear nowadays, who are “trying" to do this sort of thing. They usually miss the feel, but you guys have it in spades! Very, very cool!!

I’m in the middle of a reunion of a band I played in about 25 years ago myself. So, my thing is “only” about half as long ago as what you’re doing, but for us, it felt kinda like starting all over! I didn’t remember ANYTHING, hahaha. That’s why it’s so amazing to me, that you guys were still able to pull this off without a lot of rehearsals after such a long time :) Besides, we only made noise anyway… not “real" music (the band we’re bringing back used to play Death Metal… I’m not even kidding).

Before that band broke up 25 years back, though, and when we were tired of all the noise, we did play some Kansas, Rush and Jethro Tull covers, etc. (Tried, but failed to cover some old Yes and old Genesis, haha). But our versions definitely weren't “authentic” in any way… butchered would probably be the right word ;)

Anyway… stoked for you! You should go and play shows again! You clearly all still got it!!!

Thanks guys,

This started off when I posted on the bass players Facebook timeline a 71 recording of the band which we had done for a guy who was setting up a studio, he didn't really know what he was doing and the sound was BAD!
I said, wouldn't it be great to do that again but properly, he said, do you think we could pull it off, I replied "You bet" :)

I wanted to keep the mix for these tracks similar to the original Purple recordings which include pretty much everything, panning reverb etc. etc, just to keep the same feel. As for going back on the road, I don't really want to and the singer is not well enough to do full gigs, so we just have fun recording, having said that, the singer lives most of the time in Spain so we have a limited amount of time to do more as he's going back in a couple of weeks, but here's another one we used to play by Toefat, Chris Bennet's old 70's band, again, mixed similar to the original.

Vocals, U87 through Chandler EMI RS124, also the lead guitar both pushed hard around -25db's compression.

Bass through Altec 436c

Phil,

It is amazing what we "old blocks" can still do !!!!!

Like you I have had a very interesting life in the music world and also met and worked with/for many famous/infamous artists (although some only thought they were famous !!!!!).

Although I haven't been around for quite some time, it is good to see that some of the old "Forum" members are still here and still using the trusty old girl !!!!!

Hey Phil,
Just spent some time scanning through threads I've not read and came upon this one, love the tracks you linked, being a DP fan myself I thought you guys in the band did an epic job, Nicely Done, covering some rare tracks that don't get much of an airing these day is a great idea rather than the usual Smoke On The Water, I just love Ian Gillan and have most of his back catalogue on vinyl, one of my top favourites is Clear Air Turbulance, kind of ties in with me being a Science Fiction fan as well, but great to hear those tracks played by proper Welsh rockers as vintage as the original song writers.
Top Banana :)

We have "Flight of the Rat" all done and the vocals are going to be sorted next week, however...as my "Meters freeze" post, I've got a big problem at the moment!!
