New D8B user. A few more issues

Postby scottosterloh » Tue May 07, 2019 10:20 pm

I ran a calibration and now the
1. Faders are sticky
2. The buttons are unresponsive.
I uninstalled and reinstalled V3 from a c.f. card upgrade. I also removed and reinstalled the cmos battery.
3. Also the upgrade to V 5.1 says I need at least 32Mb not sure which ram to buy.
4. When I select the digital input/output in set up it does not keep the changes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

And you reset the CMOS correctly?

I see that there are several long threads that you started... sorry for asking something that might have been covered in one of those threads, but I don't have the time right now to read through all of those... but since this just came up in another thread (not yours):

Do you have a clock card installed at all in your desk? At least the stock clock card (you'd have to remove the metal cover from the SYNC slot, to see if the stock card is in there). If not, the d8b will not work as a mixer, the buttons won't do anything (without the ProBox), and you can't change the Input/Output configuration since the mixer itself isn't operational in the first place.

I hope this isn't it and you DO have a clock card, since all this troubleshooting for the Error 43 issue in another thread, etc. would otherwise be for nothing. None of that has to work, if you're just using the console with a ProBox (as you also mentioned you are planning to use on another thread). At that point, the computer would just be there as a power supply, and it doesn't even have to have a harddrive for ProBox operation.

If you can solve the sticky faders issue (and really don't have a clock card), then it might be worth to look for an Apogee Clock Card after all. If you got the OS working now, etc., then the sticky faders and the clock card would be the only things that hold you back.

Oh, and I think (but am not sure) that the faders always snap back to their lowest position, if the mixer portion isn't operational (i.e. no clock card). That's not the symptom of sticky faders, though. That's just what it does (I think), when it thinks it's "offline" without any clock being present.

Sorry about how all of this reads, if you DO have a clock card. Since you said you're a new d8b user, I couldn't really assume that you're aware that a clock card is necessary for mixer operation (I didn't know when I got mine).

Best of luck!

I do have a clock card. It ran fine for V3 but after the calibration it's not running right.

I didn't reset the CMOS. I bought the correct memory but it still says I need 32Mb for V5. I tried a single stick and I tried 2x128Mb same message. I have the older motherboard I'm sure that has something to do with it. Maybe I should replace my analog mixer and just use the d8b as a control surface via Probox.

If you pulled the CMOS battery, it will lose the settings that work with the console. Not sure why you aren't seeing your memory show up. The version of motherboard doesn't matter. I have the old one and am running V.5 without issue.

Thanks I'll pull the CMOS. Ya it's really confusing at this point. I bought cards for the d8b and tried different memory and I bought a Probox and also the c.f. card V5 upgrade.

The correct CMOS settings for your particular motherboard can found in the database. Are you using PC100 (maybe PC133) RAM? I believe that is what the d8b is looking for as I recall.

I have had no luck getting a C.F. (Compact Flash) to work with the older motherboards. I would start with either a working Mechanical Hard Drive or an SSD (Solid State Drive), or change the mother board to a newer one.

If anyone has the older motherboard working with CF please let us know what you did to make it work. Thanks.

I opted for the Mechanical Drive as I could get it working.

Also, you are saying version 5 but you mean 5.1 right? There is a difference.

Best of luck.

Hmm... alright, so it's not the clock card.

About the board saying you need more than 32 MB of RAM, even though you installed more... is this the old mainboard with the 166 MHz processor?

Both, the old mainboard and the new mainboard can have their memory upgraded (I have both, and it worked in both), but the old board has two separate banks of memory (for different types of memory that can be installed).

If I recall correctly, then the mainboard will "prefer" one of the banks (I think the one with the older-type, smaller memory slots), and not recognize anything that is installed into the newer bank of memory.

So, if you have a memory SIMM installed in the shorter white slots, and added some memory into the longer black (or brown... don't remember) slots, then it won't recognize it, and will just use the memory in the white/old slots.

Here's a link to a pic of the old board in the database:
http://www.sonido-7.com/d8b/photos/large/CPU1x.jpg

If anything is installed into the 4 white slots on top of the picture, and you installed something in the two black/brown slots shown below them, then only the memory in the white slots is recognized I believe.

If it's that, just shut down and pull everything out of the white slots, just leaving the memory in the darker/longer slots. This should get it recognized.

It IS really important to manually set all the BIOS settings to what is listed in the database for your board. Again, if it's the "old" board, then the settings can be found here:

http://www.sonido-7.com/d8b/files/d8b_old_mb_bios.pdf

Personally, I don't think the CF card vs. Harddisk thing is related to the memory not being recognized right. It's possible... but in the end, if the computer can load the operating system from what you got installed, then it would be weird that it would selectively decide not to read the part about addressing the memory correctly. The relevant parts of the OS written to the different types of drives are identical. IMO, CF vs. Harddisk issues should more likely look like the OS not booting at all, or "lagging" or behaving a bit odd (i.e. not able to read the needed data quick enough... but memory is more like a address-table... and fast at that. So, if the address the OS tries to access exists, then it should be found).

What's more important, IMO, for memory troubleshooting, is to pay attention to what the memory counts up to when you first start up the computer. If it doesn't find the extra memory at that point, it definitely won't find it after the OS is loaded.
And if it finds it or not when it counts up right after bootup, is usually related to either hardware or hardware compatibility trouble, or it could be wrong settings in the BIOS. But I don't recall there being anything to limit the amount of memory that is being recognized.

I'd try to solve the memory recognition problem first, before dealing with the sticky faders. For that, I COULD imagine that OS 5.1 just needs more memory for smooth fader operation.

Again, best of luck (...and sorry... I type about as fast as I speak... that's why my posts frequently get this long. For me, that's just like when I'm talking, hahaha...)
