well, I just changed out the CPU with no luck now it's saying error surface control card not ready
last known state reset. with the other CPU, it would boot up. I'm at a lost.

thanks Joe Allen

Did you connect the serial cable?

yes, the serial cable is connected. but I will check to make sure. would it matter if the CPU with the
hack on it was the older CPU with the newer d8b.

If the hack is working, I think it ought to work with any d8b desk.

The error you describe is in my experience usually a matter of the cpu-unit not being able to communicate with the desk.
I'd check that the serial cable is attached solidly on both ends. I'd also check my bios settings, and if that doesn't do anything, I'd try reseating the cables between the serial port and the brain board in the desk.

You could also try "ye-olde-BFC-wiggle" for good measure - preferably while whacking the desk with a dead chicken.... :D

well, I checked everything. still, the same. so I took out the FC kit and plugged all cables back in the hard drive
now it is booting up on the monitor all the way until it gets to the system configuration then the monitor goes black. but on the d8b it loads 5.1 and the service pack 3.0. makes you want to give up it gets tiring and it's not fun binding down to unplug everything on the CPU or the d8b when you get 65. only to find out you have to keep doing it .thats when you know you still love the d8b. I was thinking it would help me to get the CF kit.

thanks Joe Allen

ok - let's troubleshoot one step at a time.

You got the cpu unit connected to desk #1:
You say it boots, but the monitor goes black when it gets to "system configuration".
I'm unsure what you mean by that - can you elaborate?

the only way I know to say this is. on the monitor, it will show press to enter setup and everything above that it will show verifying DMI pool data and everything above that then it will say loading Mackie os please wait. that's when the monitor goes blank it doesn't show anything else after that.

it's like it boots up half way through and then the monitor goes blank and doesn't show anything after that.
I did resit the monitor card. that did not help and I was able to check the bios it's okay. also on the monitor, the mouse pointer will move even though the monitor shows nothing but the pointer.

thanks, Joe Allen

Ok, that helped me understand better.
So the machine boots, but doenst complete booting.
First I would try resetting the bios completely - detach the mains power cable, remove the battery, and move the jumper next to it to the “clear cmos” position.
(Let me know if you need further instruction on this). Leave it for a couple of minutes, then set it back, and put the battery back in.
If this doesnt help, I would try to reinstall the software on your CF card. You can use the guide I linked to earlier in the thread.
