5.1 Hack Authorisation Code

Postby Bruce Graham » Sat Sep 08, 2018 4:58 am

Hi all;

After a couple of years of running my d8b with the 5.1 hack, upon booting up this morning, required I enter the Authorisation Code (key). I enter the ode and away it ran. Booting up as usual. I have tried re-booting a few times today and all is well in the d8b world. All Plug-in for un-locked.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks again to Ralph for his brilliant work!

Cheers
Bruce

Weird. Hvent had that problem myself.
Was this on a regular hard drive, or cf card?
Maybe make sure to back up your system, just in case.

Hey Anders;

It was on a regular (Mechanical) hard drive.

I have started to back stuff up, as "things" where lost. Mostly default setting (Filters, Snapshots). Glad the FTP works on my d8b.

Waiting for 2 GB CF to arrive. I'll do the changeover on the d8B, then the HDR is next. Wish I could get the FTP to work on the HDR!

Cheers

Just to refresh my memory - did you try the network card from the d8b in the hdr?

Hey Anders;

I did not as the card "look" different not only on the out side but the PC boards are different. I did not want to run the risk of "hurting" something. I hate when smoke comes out of electronic equipment!

I think I have a spare d8b ether card, if you think there will not be "smoke on the water" I may give it a try?

Well, both machines use the same motherboard. Since I use cf cards in both, I can actually boot the d8b os in the hdr, although it complains about missing hardware.
As long as both cards are made for the pci slots they should be compatible hardware-wise.
Since I believe these os’s are the same for basic os functionality I believe it should work, and I cant see why it would give any trouble.
I can try it out on my systems first, later today when Im back from church.

Ok, seems I was half wrong.
The network card in my d8b is an ISA slot card, while the one in my HDR is a PCI slot card.
I tried the ISA card in my HDR, but couldn't make it work there.
So: you do need a pci slot network card. I the one used is a standard intel pro 100 card.

Hey Anders;

When I was researching cards for this, the one thing that each "computer dude" told me, was I would need to have the "exact" same card, because, if I didn't, I would need to install drivers for that card.

Not sure how to do that, as the OS is sooooo particular, and we have floppy drives (at this point).

I was hopping to go to used computer parts stores and find a "bin full of parts" and see what I could find, but, I do not live near any used computer stores. They are hundreds if kilometres away.

If, as you mentioned, the card is a standard intel pro 100 card, would "just any standard intel pro 100 card" work?

Any busy week ahead of me then off for another vacation. Wine country. The joys of retirement.

Later and thanks

Argh..... slightly envious here.

Anyway, yes, you cant install drivers on mackieos. Really wish we could.
Its the same with the graphics card - you can plug any agp card in there, and the machine will start fine and let you setup the bios etc. But mackieos wont start up unless its one that it supports. The compatibility problem is mainly in the software.

Anyways, i _think_ its a generic intel pro 100 - but not 100% sure.
Your best bet might be ebay.
