Mackie d8b and RME HDSP 9652

Hey folks,

So basically I've just dusted off an old d8b that I had lying around, and intend to use it. But I'm seeing all this talk of a ProBox card, and was wondering if I can just wire up my d8b through optical cables to my RME HDSP 9652?

I've got that and its expansion board, so I've got 3 in 3 out for all 24 faders, but I'm not sure what purpose the ProBox is serving beyond that.

I'm currently waiting on a PCI-PCIe conversion card, hence why I don't just plug it in and find out if it works.

Any help is appreciated!

I used to have a 9652 hooked up to my D8B. 24 channels of optical back and forth between the console and my old PCI only Mac. When I bought a new PCIe equipped Mac, there was no solution for the RME at the time, so I sold it and went with The MOTU 2408.

The RME worked great and I was loath to part with it. It had a pair of MIDI I/Os that ran the MTC and MMC between the machine flawlessly.

So, for what the 9652 was designed for....primarily audio in and out via optical, it worked perfectly with a D8B. From what I gather, the Probox turns the D8B into a giant DAW controller. Audio I/O is basically rendered useless. However, depending on the DAW you use, a good amount of 2 way MIDI fader, mute, solo and cc control is possible between the D8B and the DAW. That's pretty much all I can add to this subject.

At the moment I've got a Mackie MCU Pro and a Presonus AudioBox, was hoping to use the D8B as a combination of the two, allowing for more inputs and such.

But will it only replace the audiobox, unless I purchase a ProBox?

So if I bought an RME 9652, then I could do away with my HDR if I had a good recording program on my PC? If so, what program would you Recommend. My HDR (and it's spare) grows more unreliable every day.

I use Cubase 9. It works wonders. You can connect the RME with Cubase.

Hey Guys,
I checked out Cubase and while I was at it I looked at pro-tools, but both of them seem too cumbersome for what I want. All I want is to be able to record, playback and move tracks around and crossfade. I don't want an "in the box mixer or effects because using my mouse for all that stuff just slows me way down. (I especially hate using a mouse to move faders). Don't get me wrong, I think these programs are very good, but they are not for me. Does anyone know of a simpler program for computer recording?

I dont use faders on cubase i just leave everything at unity then i use the d8b faders. I use the mouse to add plugins on the channel of cubase. Editing is another tool that works wonders on cubase. Protools is cumbersome
