V-pot replacement

Hi all,
Having searched the market over for a replacement for my D8B, I have come to the conclusion that everything within my price range is a compromise of one sort or another while offering only (in some cases) better pre-amps. Having said this I must undertake replacing the V-pots on my original D8B (EQ section mainly), as my spare D8B (which I have been using because of this problem) has developed problems with the main audio output. Has anyone here ever replaced them?
If so, how hard are they to get to? I could mouse the EQ's but prefer not to. All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Do the V pots need replacing or cleaning??

There is a thread in here regarding cleaning. called "Fader Problems and V-Pots". There is a method for cleaning in there.

I haven't replaced any V-pots my self but will try to look into it and get back to you.

Hi Bruce,
I've already tried all the cleaning procedures and they are still far to jumpy to be usable. Time is money in the studio and I can't afford to let my customers think that something is wrong with the equipment. I want to replace them with the more lightly used v-pots from the last four channels on my spare board. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks for posting that, but I tried it & there was only marginal improvement. There is something that feels like a "bump" for lack of a better word in the affected v-pots. I repeated the process the next day just to make sure & it was the same.
My board has seen a lot of use, and maybe I am too much of a perfectionist and over-use the EQ section. The speaker level pot, however, has had issues from day one & is still the worst offender. Anyway thanks & hope you & yours are doing well.

Hi all,
For anyone who has issues with their V-pots and has exhausted all other avenues without success, I offer the following fix as a LAST RESORT. I do NOT recommend doing this unless your V-pot is unusable and you have tried all other methods of fixing it without success. That being said, here it is: 1. Remove the plastic knob from the pot and place it in the end of a cordless drill. 2. Using an eye dropper, put about 4=5 drops of alcohol (must be 90% or better) into the hole. 3. Quickly engage the stem with the plastic cap in your drill and rotate it at speed for about 10 seconds. 4. Pot works normally. I did this and now I can easily fine tune the EQ parameters ( no jumping, no jitters) and the master volume is rock solid.

I'm glad it worked! Must have been a few nervous moments when doing that!

I'll file that one away for when I need it. I have a jumpy volume pot that drives me crazy. The other methods solve it but only until I turn it back on and we are back to doing it again.

As my brother would say in cases like like......"Good Job".

That seems a bit rad. What was wrong with the 99% isopropyl alcohol suggestion in the database?

Hi Peter,
I tried all the tricks in the database before attempting this, including the 99% alcohol thing. I even repeated it several times over a couple of days. It just didn't restore the functionality of the pot. The pots would still jump several numbers at a time and sometimes extreme jumps. I just can't deal with that. At any rate I hope I made it clear that this is a LAST RESORT. If your pot is not usable, then what have you got to lose?
