Hi goonkalonkyn;

I am not feeling much love over this.

I typed "ipconfig/all" and the IP address displayed is 10.10.28.10 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0.

I down loaded SmartFTP and it would not connect to my d8b. The spinning wheel of death just kept spinning.

Hi Munk;
I tried downloading filezilla but it would not install on my computer.

I don't have, at this point, anyway to connect the d8b hard drive to my PC on an external basis either (removing the Hard Drive I mean) as I do not have an interface (USB to IDE plus power.

I have a friend who is a computer person who is going to drop by on the week end (I hope) and see if they can help me out.

It is all weird to me as this was working before (when connected to my HDR) and now it won't.

It seems I have a connection as the lights on the d8b Card (and the HDR when connected) has a solid green light when connected.

When I shut down my d8b I get a message on my computer telling me the connection has been lost.

I was suspecting the card in my laptop but for the above reason I assume it is functioning.

CRAP!

Cheers

Even when the d8b FTP server is working properly it's nothing great. I've tried a number of FTP clients and they all seem to outpace/outmuscle the d8b's FTP server's ability to keep up. Lots of dropped files or zero length files. I've found if I'm doing command line FTP or one or two at a time, all's well, but when FTPing an entire directory to the d8b, not so much.

One of these would remedy your situation without wrestling with FTP -

and if you've already got the drive out, maybe go with a compact flash you can mount on the back of the PC. I got an extra CF card so I can do CF external mounts just as I can with the HDD. Just a thought.

Hope you find some d8b love soon...

Hi Peter;

Thanks for the link to the database. I have been down that road about 4 times and it doesn't seem to work for some reason. I never get the results that are written. My laptop is about 10 years old and even though I have taken relatively good care of it it is a computer and like the d8b is subject to "things going wrong".

I will work through the databases advice again on accessing the d8b but the other issue is I do not understand some of the "language" used (acronyms for one). The general concepts of computers. I grew up in the days of analogue consoles and analogue gear when the most important things to understand where unity gain, signal levels, noise and impedance. This stuff, for the most part, is lost in the digital world. I love it, digital (the audio part), I just have a hard time keeping up with the computer part.

Thanks for your advice.

Hey Bit Sync.

Considering all I want to do is install Munk's hack, it seems removing the hard drive and using an adaptor may be easier.

I live in Canada and will see if I can find those parts here. I have an 32 gb SSD that I'm not using at this point so I may see about installing it instead if the flash drive. When I decide how to proceed. Any thoughts on SSD's?

Thanks for your help as well.

Cheers

maybe a windows firewall / third party firewall blocks you from the FTP connection?

other thing (no glue if that works) generating a MSDOS bootdisk, booting up d8b CPU and copy asc file there ?
Does anybody knows if you can access the d8b CPU with MSDOS?

If yes then I can imagine to make a floppy image where you only have to put the disk in and boot the CPU. rest will be done automatically.

Before I installed my 4 Gbyte Compact Flash I tried a 32 Gbyte Transcend SSD. I tried for days but could never get the BIOS to see the SSD. The 4 Gbyte CF was instantly recognized.

Or if you can boot your Mackie OS 5.1 can you just put the control.asc on a floppy disk, insert it in the d8b and use the Mackie desktop file manager to copy the floppy's control.asc to the correct destination?

Well, the easiest of easies would be a simple command line FTP from your laptop to your d8b. It should be pretty straightforward.

But if that's just not working out for you the floppy idea is maybe the next easiest thing, first easiest being just put the hacked control.asc on the floppy, shove it in the d8b, the use the d8b's OS desktop file manager to put the control.asc in the proper place.

If you get to the option of pulling out the hard drive then you're mixing hard (unracking the CPU/PSU, removing the cover, disconnecting and removing the HDD, obtaining an IDE to USB adapter with power supply) and easy (drag and drop on your laptop filesystem) to solve your problem.

The reason I suggested the compact flash (CF) is if you're going to go to the lengths of HDD removal anyway, why not commit to an easier and happier d8b future. With the CF you get -

    No more noise from the HDD

    No lost sleep over whether (when) your HDD will have a mechanical failure and the drive is no longer readable/bootable

    No worries about replacing a dinosaur HDD that's getting increasingly difficult to find

    Fast and easy access to the entire d8b software operating environment with a back panel CF

    Flexibility to have multiple d8b operating environments (OS3, OS5.1, OS5.1 Hacked, etc.) each on its own CF

    The ability to mix and match CPU/PSUs and consoles by simply swapping the CF boot media

    Speedier future interactions between your d8b OS and your laptop

Good luck. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Guys,
There is a guy on Ebay selling a CF kit for D8B with your choice of OS already installed. I received mine today. I'm gonna try it out tonight. Will let you know how it goes. Should be easy to replace the ASC file on the flash card.

Have a blessed day in Christ,

Check the ip addy, username, password & ports, default is 22.... just ensure they match the settings for the D8B's FTP server - you HAVE to be on the same subnet. Whatever is done, save a shit-ton of time and make sure any FTP client application uses a 'PASSIVE' connection mode. I'd suggest something like Filezilla - browser based with an intuitive interface... :ugeek:
