Help! Compatible CF Cards?

Hi folks,

New to the forum. First post. Had the d8b for years.

300Mhz version. O.S. 5.1. It was in storage, I thought I'd dust it of to re-integrate it.

Switch it on, get video. BIOS works. Inspected the settings to insure they are correct.

Won't boot from HD. Gets to a point. Resets. Same place every time.

After the prompt, 'press DEL for BIOS', I get a screen of information that disappears too quickly for me to see it before it resets. Get's stuck in that cycle until I switch it off.

With a different HD, prior 'Clone', same result.

Got an CF card to IDE convertor with a 4GB card. Bios detects the card as Primary Slave, not Primary Master, irrespective of jumper settings. So I can't install to CF to bypass any possible HD issue.


Any ideas?

Ok. Solve one issue. Dodgy ram seating. Re-seated it. It now boots up. Now to get the CF Card to work…...

Hey J-One;

Careful with the CF card thing. Not that there is an issue with the CF method, but I see you are running 5.1. Make sure you have the unlock code for 5.1 and ALL your plug in codes as well. You will have to know those after you install 5.1 AND Service pack 3. Installing SP3 requires that the Un-lock codes be entered into the system before authorising them.

Note this info comes from what I have read. I don't run 5.1 (yes that is a tear in my eye), and I don't have any of the really useful plug ins.

Just a heads up in case you didn't know.

Glad your "beast" is up and running. Change the Battery and clean all contacts, connectors while you have the hood open.

That's not true, Bruce. They can be entered after installing SP3 unless I misunderstood your syntax.

What I think I meant was, when SP3 is installed, none of the plug-ins, and I beleive 5.1, will run as they did before. The Authorisation Codes that where purchased for each software item previously working, will need to be entered in order to run as before.

I think that is correct. Please educate me or correct my syntax as required.

Thanks fellas. I've managed to get the old HD to boot. Reseated the digital cards etc.
Hopefully that eliminates the need to reinstall and saves me from afore mentioned 5.1 and SP3 Authorisation Code issues.
Just need to successfully clone the HD to the CF, but now I have a problem with the CF.

I've cloned the HD, using a trial of Macrium via Virtual box running XP on my macbook, onto a CF card. This card now seems invisible to my d8b on boot up. No Primary Master comes up. BIOS check looks like it sees the drive as a Primary Slave, but not as a Master. I get the insert System disk and restart message.

I figure the card reader works well as I used the same one to clone onto the cards via a USB to IDE adaptor.

Is it just a case of trial and error with different cards until it works?

I've tried a 4GB kingston, and a 4GB delkin PRO UDMA.

Is there a list of CF cards that work?

Seems the (TEAM TG004G2NCFJX 233X R) 4GB is popular here. I can't seem to find one to buy.

Will any 233X 4GB CF card work?

Or more to the point….Has anyone found a 233X card that did not work?

I'm trying to eliminate the failure factors before I end up buying 5 or so CF cards.

I'm not sure what CF's work or not. I used a Patriot 32GB SSD and had no issue.

I know that does answer your Q, but let's you know what does work.
