Interfaces

Postby Crash » Wed Jul 31, 2013 5:04 pm

So my buddy Bob has decided he wants to ditch his HDR rig and run his d8b with a IMac5 and Logic 9. He is looking for interface opinions. What are you guys that are doing the DAW/d8b thing, doing for an interface?

I don't have one but I'm attracted to the UA Apollo.

Ask him how much Analog I/O he needs.

I have a MOTU UltraLite mk3 attached to my iMac. 2 Mic/Inst XLRs, 6 TRS Line in, 8 TRS Line Out, S/PDIF, phones, FW, USB and internal DSP effects. Works a charm with Cubase, Logic and Studio One. Is that enough? No? Want a ton of I/O in a 1U rack form? Don't care how much it costs? Antelope Orion 32.

I still haven't ditched the HDR. I'm a very slow migrator...

I switch between DAW audio and HDR audio using a Frontier Apache lightpipe switch. The DAW audio interface is a combination of the RME HDSP 9652 for computer I/O and the RME ADI-8 QS for A/D and D/A.

Although I'm using the HDR less and less, to be sure, my computer audio interface choice was based in part on my slow migration habits and wanting to continue to have the d8b audio path to both the HDR and and the DAW. More and more I'm not even using the d8b audio, just its MIDI DAW control via D8Bridge and the RME audio path as described above.

I still use the HDR as well. Your setup is quite intriguing. I'll have to mention this to Bob. Thanks for your input.

You might also suggest to Bob the use of a blowtorch and a lot of gaffers tape to get that RME HDSP 9652 to fit in his
iMac.

I'm not familiar with the iMac's case or internal bus architecture. No PCI bus? No room? If not, then the RME HDSP 9652 would not be a suitable option for iMac owners. Maybe Bob isn't fully settled on the iMac as a DAW platform, in which case this information might be of some use. Maybe my interface information is useful to someone here besides Bob who isn't using an iMac. Lighten up, torch.

Frank has a tongue in cheek approach sometimes but he's a loveable sage :)

My d8b is connected via RME RayDat PCIe Card, that gives me 36 I/O, 4 ADAT, AES and S/PDIF.
Runs like a charm, but no garanty for you, I´m on a PC with WIN XP.
But it´s good value for the money,
