D8B as a 24 Chanel DAW Controller + Audio

Postby elperroromel » Wed May 22, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi

I have been working weeks ago on making a program for using a d8b as a DAW Controller via MCU Protocol, (something like d8bridge) but without losing the audio part of the console, my Idea is that the d8b DAW Mode could work as a native
Layer (like the HUI Layer)

What is different from using MIDI Map to control a DAW? : using MIDI Map, the d8b CPU sends MIDI messages when you press a button, or move a fader, but you can't just send only the MIDI message without affecting the button/fader behavior: example, if you assign a midi message to the headphone pot, when you move that pot, you will affect the headphone volume, or you can't map the "assign" button to other DAW function without changing the channel Assign status when you press it

Here is some information about the previous status of the project:

http://www.d8bforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=892

and this is a wiki with useful information that I will keep updating, later I will upload the source code of my programs so you can test it, and help to improve it

any comments/suggestions are welcome..

P.S. sorry for my bad english, is not my native language

well it seems that no one is interested... maybe would be better to program all by myself and keep the program only for me then...

I don't think that's the case, el, it's just that the road you're travelling is one that some, maybe most, don't understand. There are also some concerns about the accuracy of the MIDI mapping protocol, specifically "pan", although that never bothered me.

well I am not using MIDI mapping, I'm doing a program myself like d8bridge to translate from d8b to a MCU and 2 Extenders, and It works very well, Including the pan pots, except that d8bridge disables the audio part of the d8b and with my program I can still use the preamps/buses/etc...

and with translating I don't mean like using a Bome Midi's translator file, because My program isn't using the d8b MIDI port, I'm using a custom Console Data cable that connects to the CPU and the desk via db25 and to my laptop via USB(something like d8bridge but using 2 serial/usb interfaces instead o only one )

You mean something like this?

Will this work platform independent? PC & Mac? If so, you have a fan.

yes its something like that, just check the videos/images from a guy making the same cable and It worked for him: https://code.google.com/p/d8b-2-mcu/wiki/CableConnections

and well the main idea is that it could be used platform intependent, but until now only works in w!nd0ws, te idea is to use cros-platform Serial Communications and MIDI Libraries so the program can be compiled in different OS (at least win and Mac)
For now I'm first making it work under w!nd0ws and when all work well, maybe its only matter of changin the libraries (I have never programmed for Mac, but If I use cors-platform third-party libraries maybe it should work) and well until now, you can always use a mini-laptop or netbook running windows and my program and connect to you Mac DAW using external Midi Interfaces

I've been following all of your experiments with this. I'm very interested in seeing a final product. And like Peter says not everyone here is too well versed on programming and the like. But i do get excited when someone pushes this idea further down the road. Keep up the good work!

Wow....what a proto-kludge.
Considering the components used to make that thing, perhaps mounting everything inside a little metal box might be reasonably cost-effective way of presenting this thing to the public.
