Connecting to a Mac (Part 2)

I have 3 ADAT cards but they are being used to connect my Alesis HD24. I have an AIO8 but this is being uses for FX send/returns.
Thus I can either route into channel(s) but this means more AD/DA conversions? Or send a stereo input via SPDIF input.
If I do this how do I route the digital input to a pair of channels?
Or is there a better way? I want to combine some virtual instruments with hardware synths etc through the d8b.
