Can you use either a series or parallel 25 pin data cable from the cpu to the board?

No serial cable. It should be a straight 25 wire cable - pin1 wired to pin1, pin2 to pin2, etc. Serial cables are wired differently. I'm not sure about parallel cables, either - it might depend on the manufacturer (e.g. all grounds wired together, which would not work in this application). It is best to build your own or use a tester/multimeter to ensure that what you have is appropriate for the D8B.
