eratic noise

Hello all, hope to find some help here as I always do! Have had my D8b and HDR for about 2years. Had the usual problems getting started but all has been well until a couple of days ago. I was in a session and I noticed some strange frequencies in the recordings. When I input a signal into the board all is well, until I arm the channel. Then, only when playing or singing, I get some very strange frequencies in the signal. Has anyone experienced these problems, any solutions. thanks Brian

Are you using an inserted Compressor or a pream on the line in? I had a problem with my external dbx comp. It used to send a strange signal lke a glitch when recording. I used to hear the noise during playback and not during recording. After some weeks the dbx broke. My technician replaced its internal power supply....now everything is OK.

Hey Carlos, thanks for the reply. I am using a presonus eureka on the front end, however, I hear the noise before I start recording. As soon as I arm the track. I tried it straight in and have the same problem. I am not sure what has happened, but it currently seems to be working ok. Not sure what has changed. Same guitar, same preamp, but now no noise, at least for the moment. I had bought some external drives that have fans in them, i swapped those out for my old ones, but that didn't help. I am not sure what made it stop, or start for that matter, but for the moment, it is working correctly.

Could it be some phasing problem? Maybe both the input channel and the corresponding tape return are assigned to the LR bus (or some other path that ends on the main bus)?

That is what I was thinking. Some odd routing issue since it only happens when you arm a channel.

No, checked all the routing. everything is as it should be. I checked, and reversed the phasing without any success. Currently everything is working correctly, I am not sure what caused it to happen, or what caused it to stop. I appreciate the input from everybody. Hopefully I won't have the issue again. But with this beast, one never knows. I love this unit, but sometimes.....................to the moon alice......lol

Only happened the one time so far. I have been using it for the last couple of days without issue. But I hate for it to happen again in the middle of a session. It almost sounded as I was getting phase cancellation, except that I was only using an acoustic guitar, D.I. Later went back to record vocals and noticed the noise on the recorded track and on the vocal track that I was recording. Tried different files, that had previous recordings on them and as soon as I armed the channel to record, there it was. But only as I played or sang. Even before recording, just arming the track and checking my signals produced the sound whatever it was.

Every now and again, when the d8b fires up, it will just do something odd.... it is the nature of the animal. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over it. Reboot and carry on.

One thing I've noticed about external pre-amps is they generate considerable noise when the channel is OPEN but the pre-amp is OFF. Be sure to check this. Once the pre-amp is turned on there is a very low level noise but oddly much more noticeable (buzz) when OFF with that line open.

I have traced weird noises to certain channels being open at the wrong time such as open input channels for recording picking up the room, etc. when mixing. Be sure to mute all channels not being used in a given session.
