Hi,

I'm like an OG owner 1997. Me and Mr. Rivers used to answer all the questions for years. I'm no longer that guy anymore. Its been 15 years since I used my desk.

Anyway, I just fixed my HDR24/96 drive and hooked everything back up. I cannot figure out why I cannot get my D8b to show the timecode while playing.


I Have This WC pathway:

Apogee Rosetta as my clock source out--->D8B WC IN------>D8B Out---->HDR24/96 WC IN * TERM button = IN


MIDI D8B ---->HDR

What are the settings I should have on the HDR24/96 and the D8B to get the time code to sync?

I'm going insane trying to get everything to work.

Are you using the original D8B wordclock as you need an Apogee one.

I am using the apogee one.

Are you seeing Clock "locked" in your settings?

I realise it is a stupid and probably insulting question with your background, BUT the Apogee card you are using does it have one or two BNC connectors ?

The D8B side has in / out and the HDR card has in / out and a terminate button
The physical connections are 100% good. My Clock cables are in perfect functioning order.

I'm thinking I have a setting wrong in my HDR. Its been a minute since I used this setup (I went 100% analog again for 10 years). My hard drive crashed and I have since replaced it (HDR).

The D8b is set to word clock BNC (External) and is recognizing the Apogee Rosetta AD and is locked at 48k / 24Bits
The HDR is NOT recognizing the External Word Clock. (indicated by the flashing WC).

I made sure my IRQ10s are accurate in the BIOS.
The cables are correctly wired as : Apogee Out---->D8B in----->D8b out------>HDR in--TERM = ON.


To receive clock:
What settings should I have under Sync for the HDR?
What settings should I have for MIDI on the HDR?

To receive time-code:

Definitely sounds like you have the correct Apogee card.

Unfortunately I can't assist you with the HDR as I use the Alesis HD24 (far better unit !!!!!!!).

Just a thought and I have no idea what else you might have, BUT have you thought about simply using the d8b and the HDR and leaving out the Rosetta unit for a test. Again because of my complete lack of knowledge about the HDR there could be a very good reason you have it in circuit.

Timecode has nothing to do with the clock card(s).

The clock card(s) are for "digital clock" as in, the timing of how the 44,100 (or 48,000) samples are sent each second. That is completely independent from the timecode display on the D8B.

The D8B cannot "create" timecode (no matter what clock card is installed) - it can only RECEIVE timecode via MIDI and sync to it.

So, if the only MIDI connection as shown in the original post is this:

MIDI D8B ---->HDR

...then there's no MIDI timecode being sent to the D8B, since no MIDI cable is connected FROM the HDR and TO the D8B. (Or was this omitted in the description?)

If you only have a single MIDI cable at this moment, connect it in the other direction, from the MIDI out on the HDR, to the MIDI in on the D8B. That should ensure that the D8B "can" receive MIDI Timecode that it could then show in its display.

...the settings need to be right, too, of course... but if there really is no MIDI cable going from the HDR to the D8B, then there is no way of it receiving MIDI timecode to display on the timecode display. So, let's start there and see if timecode shows up on the display, before messing with the settings that "may" already be right.

Digital Clock Sync and MIDI Timecode seem to get confused frequently on this forum. They're both important for the D8B & HDR, etc. - but again, be careful not to confuse them, because they're handling completely different things ("digital-sample-time-alignment" vs "song-timing-and-position").

I'm aware midi and WC TC are two different things.


I should have separated the two issues i'm having for clarity. While both are going on I kind of clumped them into the same topic.

For Clarity sake:


Issue 1: ---- No MTC is being shared between the HDR and the D8b.

A) I still need settings if anyone is willing to share so I can verify mine are correct (I believe they are)
B) Yes of course there are cables going from both the HDR and D8B (in /out).


Issue 2: Clock will not sync on the HDR. I have blinky clock light and sync static.



Both issues started after my HDR - HD failed and I had to re-format a new drive.



NOTE: for about 15 minutes I had intermittent MTC Time Sync but it was very erratic. Not sure if this was conflicting settings or not.

Thanks - good to know what the actual problem is, before sinking time into chasing down an unclear symptom.

So, it sounds like you’re trying to use your Apogee Rosetta converter as the WC clock source, and then “daisy-chain” the clock signal through the D8B to the HDR.

That doesn’t work, if you don’t have a modification done to your Apogee Clock card in the D8B, to allow you to turn the termination off.

By default/design, the termination on the Apogee word clock card is ALWAYS ON, and daisy chaining word clock is not an option. The only options you have, is to either modify your Apogee Clock card so you can turn the termination off, or to change the order of how you’re clocking things.

So, if you need to daisy-chain, use the Rosetta as the WC clock master, send it to the HDR with termination OFF (and word clock set to external ) and then have the D8B at the end of the word clock daisy-chain (also set to "External" for WC sync), since it HAS to be at the end, if the clock card is not modded to remove termination (or allows to switch it in and out).

As for the settings… my HDR was down, but I spent a little time to fix that just now, to see what my settings are and if that works… got it working (I haven’t used my HDR, lately… mostly interfacing with the computer/DAW these days).

At first, the play/stop buttons on the D8B would work to control the HDR, but the time-display on the D8B wouldn’t show anything… I think what I had missed there, was in the HDR under Windows/Setup/MIDI to activate “Generate MTC” (which was inactive for me - and for a reason... when my DAW is the sync master to everything, I don't want the HDR to generate MTC). This then sends MIDI Time Code (MTC) over MIDI, and as long as the MIDI cables are correctly connected to the D8B, it should sync up to it.

So, I’d check these things first (word-clock daisy chain order, and making sure the HDR generates/sends MTC over MIDI), and if you’re still stuck, share the specifics and I’ll take another look

Most of the other settings, like frame rate, sample rate, etc., are dependent on the project settings you use, and they just need to match on both ends. So, it's kinda hard to go over the options there, without just quoting the manual.
