Fader problems

Postby Carlo » Sun Aug 11, 2019 2:14 pm

Dear All,

Have you ever experienced this?

While mixing and using fader bank 17 to 24 plus master (the 9fader bank)...

For example if fader 20 is pushed upwards while mixing, 3 other faders jump on their own...its very evident on the GUI. Have you ever experienced it? is there a component problem related to this and maybe a way how to fix it?

Thanks
Carlo

A complete shot in the dark from my part - as I've not really gone that deep into the actual mixing on my desk.
But could it be related to automation?

I don't think it's automation, as far as I know, it's not possible to link a channels fader to two others when automating so the three work together, but try de-activating the automation on those channels and see what happens?

Hi guys. No its not automation. Its a problem on the bank itself. If i use the mouse all works well. It happens only when i touch the faders

Wow - you've managed to get touch sensitive faders!!!
:D

Sorry - couldn't resist....

Hmm..
So either it's software or hardware fault.
How long ago is it since you installed the OS?

Maybe check the fader boards for any obvious shortcircuiting...

I did have something like that going on early on, when I first got my D8Bs. However, it went away after I did the whole re-seat ribbon cables, and clean all contacts, card slots, connectors, v-pots, etc. etc.

I don't know which of the steps did it, but I suspect that it's yet another symptom of the same old ribbon-cable thing. As far as I recall (but I'm not sure anymore), it kept changing faders in the same bank of 8 around the one I was moving. And I only had these kinds of problems in certain fader banks (i.e. on two of the banks on one desk, and one on the other desk, if I remember right).

But again - that was before I did the initial restoration attempt, and afterwards, that problem was gone, along with a slew of other misbehaviors.

Maybe it's time to do the old "re-seat the ribbon cables" thing yet another time?

I think I read that you recently did that, though. When I did mine, I think I went through nearly a can full of Caig's Deoxit (...the "Fader" version on the V-pots, etc.). If you didn't clean all the contacts when doing the reseating, maybe that's necessary...?

Also, I didn't do that on mine, but as Phil usually suggests, maybe also make sure to run your thumbnail along where the ribbon cable connector clamps down on the cables themselves, and then carefully pinch them back together with pliers or something (I did pinch all of mind tightly closed when I did mine... but didn't know about Phil's trick yet, back then).

Good luck!

Hello to all

Thanks for your input. The problem is not the ribbon cable since i have changed different 9fader boards that have worked well with the same ribbon. I have mentioned this problem to the late Eric Russ (for those who don't know him he used to be the major source of supply of parts for the d8b community. God bless him). Eric told me that this problem is related to some components on the fader board and that his technician used to repair them and knows exactly what the problem is and what component/s to change. Most probably caps. If someone knows this guy (the tech) that Eric used to work with we can get some info about the repairs of these faders since the problem is not only isolated to jumping faders but to many other symptoms of malfunction of the fader boards.

Maybe if someone can call Eric's wife we can get in touch with this technician.

cheers
Carlo
