install from cd?

I just bought an old d8b, and there was ONE old floppy in the pocket of the manual.
I managed to do a clean install of v.3 and plugins, but after that this floppy died - no longer possible to format.
So I wondered: I know it's possible to have a cd-rom booting and functioning as a floppy drive (by making a drive in ram).
But has anyone fiddled with this install method?
