I'm not sure I'd do that if I were you, crash. It could mess with the one that's already on the HD of the interchanged PSU and you'd regret it if you couldn't get back to fully working again. Just sayin'. :)

All this being said, If the binary could be rewritten to always return true when the "is license valid function" comes up during boot.. then all can be unlocked. Maybe?

Have a blessed day.

A bit late, but I have only read the entire thread today, my details are:

David Gibson (forum name CSP)
Registered owner OS v5.1
Vers 5.1: working code.

Not sure what there is in the USA, but in Australia we have the "Consumer Affairs Department" who specialise in correcting faults/problems between suppliers and customers and the problems express in this forum I am sure would fall directly into their area of expertise.

Hi Forum!
I've been following this thread with great interest since I have 2 d8b sitting here, one of then needing the upgrade. Could not by it from Mackie, and I cannot hack the software.
So - when time permits - I will try the hardware approach. This weekend I will try what happens if I remove the id chip. If this does not help (and I think it won't) I will try to emulate the chip with an microcontroller. I could assign any ESN to any brainboard then...

I know I mentioned this as a concept a few pages back but I'd want to very careful that the id chip wasn't damaged in case it needs to be put back. Most of the stuff on the internal boards is surface mount stuff and when you desolder them, they're pretty much throw away at that point.

Just sayin'

No problem with a 6 pin smd... I have to try anyhow, I really don't want to use a 5.1 and a 3.0 console side by side. I have received a very friendly but discouraging mail from Mackie today - no ETA for the generator coming online again. They suggested I could download 3.0 instead...
If the chip dies, who cares - it will be emulated anyway. I will record the data steam before removal. What's more - I really want to know what happens with that chip missing.

Interesting however delicate approach.... If you are good at soldering tiny chips its worth trying. ITs not my type of job and i'm desperate to have the 5.1 on my second d8b. I have a similar setup like yours maxcz and its very funny to have same hardware with different OS.

Good luck and keep us posted........be extra careful. We have to do something and get that OS5.1 running.
