just being honest

unless there are a lot more people signing this
I don't think Mackie will help us out.

not trying to take away anyone's hope. but Mackie
has got a track record with a lot of products that has been
discontinued and all the forum that cam with the products
are discontinued too. there word was to serve you with updates
for years to come on most all the products that's now are out dated and
discontinued. the d8b was one of the high price products they sold besides the dxb
and they made a lot of money from people like us. and now we need there help
with a problem that they caused in the first place. if they don't want to help people
out that's been with them for a long time or the new people that has there product
then they should at least give the codes or anything that that could help any one
out to someone that could. but to me its like Mackie got our money and so the hell
with us they could care less about us now. yes I am pissed

SO I have a concern, I am just about to pull the trigger on picking up a pristine D8B (basically new in box) for $400
the guy that has it acquired it when he bought out a storage shed that apparently was storage for a now defunct music store.

My concern is it has the original series CPU and only OS V2, am I going to be able to upgrade to V3? or even better
V5 because I really want the HUI control.

thoughts ?

I can feel everyone's pain on this matter. Frankly, I am surprised they gave us support as long as they did, which was way longer than I expected. The console was suppposed to have a viable life of 5 years as a product as I remember. Don't read that wrong, I am not talking console life itself, I am talking as a viable product line before it was obsolete due to advancing technologies. Unfortunately for Mackie, the 3rd party hopes and dreams for this console just didn't materialize like they expected.

At some point, it is just financially not worth the hassle. This is nothing new to Mackie, or any other company that has to maintain some sort of pofit margin to continue. I feel like they have been pretty loyal to the d8b crew for a longer time than most companies would have. This console is coming up on 16-17 years (1998 as I recall) since it was released, I can think of one person that is still there when this console was still being made just to put it in perspective of the time line we are talking about.

We may be surprised yet but I can see where they might just draw the line in the sand and be done with it. There are just not many folks out there that are looking to upgrade their really old consoles to the latest software version.
Luckily we have this awesome forum to help us all limp along as best we can.

I agree with you crash and have made similar observations elsewhere.

However, when you think about it, there must be a master authorization code in much the same way as the management and staff of a hotel have a master key for all the rooms. Essentially for service purposes. Why charge anything for 5.1 anymore? They're done with it.

Sorry it's early here and I haven't fully woken up yet.

In the scheme of things, there isn't one... just chaos.

I don't believe that there is a "master code" to crack this thing unfortunately.

but I think someone has got to know something about this code
or what ever it is called. or it would have never made it on the production line
I just think it so sad that Mackie want help us out. I feel like they can but they want

Ok so another question, since I am getting such a killer steal on the base D8B i have come across, can I just swap the
Brain board on the console for one that is already authorized for 5.1 and just download the software from MAckie
to install on the CPU?

Will that work and give me 5.1

I have wanted this board since it came out, the the DXB came out and I lusted after that one as well
But to make it work as the front end of my project studio it has to be able to do the HUI
for all 3 of the DAW's that I use most for clients.

The brain board wants to see the matching CPU as well, or least the hard drive I suspect.

I would avoid the dxb like the plague. It was a cool concept but the build on those were...eh.

I am unsure of what you are using for your three DAW's but if you are looking for control that'll blow your clients skirt up, I would look at the Slate Raven series. It may not do HUI though but the wow factor is well...Wow.

Yup... the boot media needs to be present; essentially look at the whole d8b 'eco-system' as such - that whole CPU setup has a physical footprint WAY too big to fit inside the d8b's console, SO relocate that particular functionality to the 'satellite' CPU boxen. Electrically, it makes ZERO difference when you think about the components involved. If something equivalent was to be engineered nowadays, the microprocessor and the ancillary peripherals inside the CPU could certainly be fit into the console package; things are SO integrated and 'shrunk' footprint-wise anymore... :ugeek:

The console & the boot media (hard disk, cf card, etc) are integral parts concerning anything installed (OS, Plugins, etal)...

Just treat everything accordingly (even if you don't have an accordion :D )...

Peace
