Built a custom D8B external power supply

Postby livefromheaven » Mon Feb 17, 2020 1:55 am

In case anyone is curious, I spent some time the past couple of weekends building a custom external D8B power supply & BFC (outside the case to avoid heat issues). If interested I can attach more info about the parts I used, although I mostly followed Ralph's documentation. The most important thing with my D8B is getting the voltages dialied in correctly - the 5V supply seems to need more like 5.32v.

Hi,
Very impressive! Do you find your D8B to be more stable since you installed this power supply?

Have a blessed day,

Thank you! The old Mackie PSU was causing my D8B to behave erratically (jumping faders, pan knobs, random shutdowns). After attaching the new power supplies all of these concerns seem to be fixed (although it's only been a couple of days). Also it is silent and only 1U rack space.

That's impressively neat work, I like that it's in a 1U rack, will it require fan cooling or will it be ok without?

Thanks! Luckily I have an open space above that should help radiating heat, but I'm taking temperature measurements to verify. Hoping that no fan will be needed.

Hi, so from the pictures there are 3 power supplies replacing the
1. ATX power supply
2. Liner PS
3. ASTEC PS

can someone enlighten me what is the purpose of the ASTEC PS please? This is encased in a metal case facing the liner ps pcb.

Thanks

Carlo
