Please confirm what i think to be the case....

Postby mozza3186 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 3:05 am

My d8b has been giving me the system 43 mumbo jumbo on and off for a while. It is now not booting at all. Reseated all ribbons and connectors checked bios is correct still no joy.
So against the advice on the d8b database i went to mackies faq's and used the ide hdd auto detect function in the bios settings. i'm now starting to thing it is actually the drive that has died. The auto detect reads

Primary Master
Size=0 CYLS=0 Head=0 Precomp =0 landz=0 Sector=0 Mode + Normal

It says exactly the same for all the others, secondry etc etc. Except the primary master takes 30 secs or so to give theese results. Am i right?? is there any way of knowing for sure??

Many thanks in advance :D

Make sure there is not a non-OS floppy in the floppy drive. That will keep it from booting if i recall corectly.

Good luck. Let us know what it turns out to be and what the solution is.

Deffo no disk in the drive iv not owned a floppy disk or drive (other than in the d8b) for nearly 10 years. My g4 Doesn't even have one. I'd really love to know if it is my hard drive before i go on the mission to find a relic of a hd and a maschine that has a floppy drive. I have no os disks.....

Maybe switching over to a compact flash drive would make more sense. http://www.sonido-7.com/d8b/tpis.html#Post15

I'v now confirmed the drive is dead. Picked up a 1 gig drive from the dump plugged it in and was instantly detected by the ide hdd auto detect. Now i need to find a replacement. I like the idea of the compact flash method but kind of think times have moved on since that retrofit. Any one have any thoughts on using an ide solid state drive??
