Mix off Challenge.. How good are you ??

Postby funk » Sun Nov 18, 2018 8:27 pm

Hi all, i was chatting to Aj (arjepson) and came up with an idea for a mix off challenge..
the chat went like this....

"for a bit of fun, i have another tracks iv done so i could pick one and put it on drop box for a mix down challenge ? might be abit more fun than the other idea i had of starting a track and asking everyone to contribute to see what comes out, thinking about that, it must be hard to get an idea for a format that someone has done and already had pre idea for, if you think its a good idea for a "mix down" i could do a dedicated post for that and get going. ... oh oh hold on...we could do a poll post and and the winner could host the next track............... cool, the more i write the more i like it"

so... thats it,
i could open a drop box link with all the stem files in, who ever is interested pm me and al send the link ( save having on here for anyone to come on and download) so open to D8B members only.
then if we all have a bash at it, either i can collect them all and put them all on a soundcloud page or you can open a link for your self and we will list them all for voting, the track can then if wanted get released by the owner with a credit to the winner and the winner gets to host the next track, or pass that on to someone who does want to host a track
????? who is up for that ?
if all good then some rules should be in order....
1, mixer must be a D8B
2, FX and Plugins must only be in the D8B
3, you can alter the format , chop it up, extend/shorten use any of the sounds anywhere.
4, you can only use the sounds given. you dont have to use all the sounds but no added sounds to be used.
5, must use the original vocal track. even if only in part.
6, can only be released by the owner. ( a safe guard to stop 10 versions of it floating about)

Would that be a good set of rules ?? add some take some away ??

so thats it, lets hear them mixing skills guys, who,s up for that ???

#2 wouldn't work for me. I use a small truckload of outboard gear. Not sure I would be down for Stems either. I find that to be sort of a drag to work with if you mean for example stems being something like a stereo drum kit, instead of all the individual pieces.

I am guessing the other idea died on the vine....?

aj, Badge, well done guys another few have we have our Mix off.

Crash, the other idea is still open just waiting for people to submit parts.

good point about the external FX as also assuming not everyone will have a HDR so will have to use something else.
so if we change that to any fx in or out the d8b??
Regarding the stem files i have done them on the HDR so only had 24 tracks, and some of them are doubled up ( some other parts in the gaps, like if there is a long space on say a guitar track there may be a small key part as well) so a few will need spliting, the drums yes when done as one or two stems as say a stereo mix you cant split them as there just was not room to have
1, bass drum,
2, snare top
3 snare bottom
4 toms
5 OH Left
6 OH right

so these were done as a stereo mix also there are two drum parts, so would take up at least 10 tracks.
the drums were done on a Boss Roland DR880 so the overall sound is well good enough for our little mix off.
all the other files are dedicated, ie
1, vocals
2 backin vocals
3 leys left
4 keys right
etc etc or what ever is on them tracks,

ok i have the files ready to go, i have picked a song that im working on at mo so there might be a few bits to edit, done in a style i don't normally do but still funky...ish.
there is one sample in there some of you might recognize from "US3 flip fantasia" here is how iv got it so far...

we need another few, common guys, whos in ???? put some coal in that D8B and fire it up.
